The Name (Ephesians 1.21b)
Paul is attempting to describe the power of God. How does one describe something that is utterly indescribable? He uses superlatives and examples, yet all fail short. But as best he can, he depicts God’s immense and overwhelming power using four different Greek words. In the end, he states God has limitless and absolute resource and power by which He creates dynamic explosions of His power (the word used is where we get our word dynamite – thus a dynamite explosion of God’s power!). The great test of whether the holiness we profess to seek or to attain is truth and life will be whether it be manifest in the increasing humility it produces. In the creature, humility is the one thing needed to allow God’s holiness to dwell in him and shine through him. In Jesus, the holy one of God who makes us holy, a divine humility was the secret of his life and his death and his exaltation; the one infallible test of our holiness will be the humility before God and men which marks us.
