Reading Shelf 01

In lieu of a book review, I decided to list the books I am currently reading through.  In my “random” post, I mentioned  I tend to read several books at one time – some I blaze through, a few I read a chapter or two a week – but the plethora of books keeps my reading interesting and fresh.  Here is what is on my “reading shelf” today: Read moreRead more

Continuous Revival :: Norman Grubb

Have you ever read the stories of the great revivals of days gone by where the Spirit overtook a place, everyone fell on their faces in repentance, testimonies abounded, lives were forever changed, and the city itself was altered?  Have YOU ever experienced such a movement of God?  What about experiencing such revival every day?  Could there be such a thing as continuous revival?  Norman Grubb says yes. A passionate desire.  Five years as a dream.  One year of active progress … sorta.

I’m a book fanatic, especially the classic Christian books on what the Christian life is suppose to be.  Much of what is in the bookstores today is fluff or garbage, to be blunt; and I should know, I use to worked seven years in a Christian bookstore.  But since that time of dusting shelves and laughing at titles, I have had a great desire to compile an annotated guide to deeper Christian life books – basically a list and short description of the greatest of great Christian books out there (several of which are out of print).   A year ago I even purchased several domain names to which to build this concept around – a place online where you could get the grit, gusto, and grand quotes and books from the heroes of the faith. Andrew Murray – The Authorized Biography :: Leona Choy

Andrew Murray, the famous author and preacher of the Deeper Christian Life, is reported to have written over 240 books during his lifetime (1828-1917).  Amongst these outstanding works ranks some of my most treasured books – many of which has radically changed my life.  But who is the man behind the words?  While I had read several of his books, I knew little of Murray himself.  That is until I read his biography. The Autobiography of George Muller

What does it mean to live by faith?  Can we truly put our full weight, assurance, and hope in Christ?  While these may seem like funny questions to ask (of course Jesus is sufficient to meet our every need) – how many of us truly live that way?  A century ago, there was a man who decided to prove to his generation that faith in Christ was absolutely necessary and would be ample to meet every need. Chocolate Soldier :: CT Studd

We are missing much in today’s so-called “version” of Christianity.  A hundred years ago a man by the name of CT Studd thought so too.  As Christians we are called to heroic feats as Jesus uses our lives to go out, proclaim, serve, and save the lost.  It is all Him and His movement in our lives, but today we shrink back and hide out of fear, weakness, selfishness, and sin.  Studd’s mandate in his little book, Chocolate Soldiers, is just that – become the strong, poured-out vessel God desires to use rather than the weak, melt-at-the-sight-of-fire individual. God’s Missionary :: by Amy Carmichael

Few books have the ability to grip the reader, bring tremendous illumination, conviction, and stirring of soul, and do it all within fifty pages.  It is as if Amy Carmichael wrote the words with a dagger dipped in her own sweat and blood, for she not only sets a seemingly impossible standard but hers was such a life.
